Ireland less milk, Poland France and Italy more

September 23, 2024 - Alex Jurvillier

The Irish milk supply shows a declining milk supply in July compared to the same month last year. However, this is not the case for Poland, France, and Italy. These countries actually produced more milk compared to July last year.

The milk supply from Ireland continued to decline in July. This was expected, as it has been the trend that has been occurring in recent years. The milk supply in July, as recently reported by Eurostat, was 1.01 million tons. This is also a decrease compared to last year, as the milk supply in July 2023 was 1.04 million tons. Additionally, the milk supply is below the five-year average for July, which stands at 1.03 million tons.

The milk supply up to July in Ireland was 5.49 million tons. This is significantly lower than the milk supply in 2023 for the same period, which amounted to 5.78 million tons. In 2022, the milk supply up to July was 5.83 million tons, and in 2021, it was 5.86 million tons. In 2020, the milk supply up to July was 5.51 million tons. This marks the third consecutive year of decline in the milk supply up to July.

In August, the milk price increased for some major dairy organizations, as reported by Irishexaminer. Tirlán pays an average of 53.36 cents per liter. Irish Dairygold pays an average of 53.5 cents per liter. Carbery pays an average of 48.03 cents per liter. The higher price partially compensates for the lower production for Irish dairy farmers.

France
The French milk supply decreased, as is the case most years in july, to 1.94 million tons. This year's milk supply is higher than July 2023, when the milk supply was 1.92 million tons. Compared to the five-year average of 1.96 million tons, this year's July milk supply is lower.

The total milk supply up to July was 14.38 million tons in France. In 2023, it was 14.19 million tons up to July, making the current year higher. The milk supply up to July in 2022 was 14.52 million tons. The overall French milk supply seems to be recovering this year after a dip in 2023.

Polish milk supply improves
With 1.14 million tons, the milk supply from Poland in July is higher than the five-year average of 1.1 million tons. It is also higher than July 2023, with 1.13 million tons.

The milk supply from Poland has shown significant improvement for several years. In 2020, the milk supply up to July was 7.44 million tons. This increased to 7.45 million tons in 2021. In 2022, the milk supply in that period further rose to 7.61 million tons. In 2023, the upward trend continued towards 7.76 million tons. This year, the Polish milk supply up to July was 8.09 million tons.

Italian milk supply increases significantly
The Italian milk supply decreased in July 2024 compared to the previous month, to 1.03 million tons. This is higher than the 1.02 million tons in July 2023, but slightly below the five-year average of 1.04 million tons.

The Italian milk supply was relatively high up to July, at 7.88 million tons. This is a significant increase compared to the 7.47 million tons in 2023. 2022 falls in between with 7.66 million tons.
