Onion exporters are on a roll. For the third time this season, weekly exports exceed 40,000 tons. One destination stands out in the latest figures.
In week 50, the Netherlands exported 40,017 tons of onions, according to the data from KCB/GroentenFruit Huis. This further extends the lead over last season. Last year at this time, 24,741 tons were exported, and the five-year average stands at 33,173 tons. The total export for this season is 697,892 tons. That's nearly 90,000 tons more than last season, but in the three years prior, week 50 saw exports surpassing 700,000 tons.
In week 50, Senegal was by far the largest recipient of Dutch onions with 12,763 tons. Senegal has received a total of 138,952 tons of onions this season, nearly the same as last year at this time. Ivory Coast follows at a distance with 5,402 tons. Belgium takes the third spot with 3,163 tons. This week, Indonesia appears in the top 10 for the first time. The Emerald Belt was responsible for an export of 1,898 tons in week 50.
