Irish milk supply breaks downward trend

November 11, 2024 - By our team of market reporters

The monthly milk supply in Ireland in September exceeded last year's level for the first time in 2024, according to the latest figures from Eurostat.

The milk supply in September was 792,420 tons, higher than the 786,370 tons from last year. This brings the total milk supply in 2024 so far to 7,189,060 tons. In the same period last year up to September, the milk supply was 7,499,000 tons. That is still a significant decrease, but the gap may be further narrowed.

Noel Murphy of the ICMSA (Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers Association) tells Agriland that the weather conditions in Ireland in the autumn have been favorable for dairy farmers. In addition, higher milk prices are encouraging farmers to produce more milk. The situation for farmers is now better than in the spring and summer. The ICMSA emphasizes that cooperatives should pass on the higher prices they receive to dairy farmers as well.
