Rising milk prices boost Polish milk supply

December 10, 2024 - Wouter Baan

The milk production in Poland has further increased in October compared to 2023. The higher milk prices are a stimulating factor. However, the bluetongue virus is becoming a growing concern, now that the virus has been detected for the second time.

The milk supply in Poland reached 1.079 million tons in October. Compared to the same month a year earlier, this is an advance of 3.3% and over 4.5% compared to the five-year average. The percentage lead compared to the previous month has also increased. This is likely due to the rising milk prices in Poland, which have risen to over €50 per 100 kilograms, according to data from the Polish statistical office.

Bluetongue
The Bluetongue virus (serotype 3) has now also been detected in Poland. The disease was first detected at the end of November on a beef cattle farm, and yesterday (December 9), the virus was detected for the second time. This time on a dairy farm in the Pyrzyce district, over 300 kilometers from where the virus was first detected. Surrounding countries like Ukraine have already imposed a banon the import of livestock from Poland.
