Dutch milk supply declines at a slower rate in 2025

December 11, 2024 - Klaas van der Horst

The Dutch milk supply will decrease only slightly further in 2025 than in this year. Despite the buyout of dairy farmers, reducing the dairy herd, and the forced reduction of manure production.

This is at least what ZuivelNL takes into account in the budget for 2025. This was determined during the general meeting held on Tuesday.

Final supply figures for 2024 are not yet known, but according to ZuivelNL, the Dutch milk supply is expected to decrease by about 2.1% compared to 2023. The main causes are the impact of infections with the bluetongue virus and the phasing out of derogation.

In the coming years, the development of the Dutch milk pool is expected to continue to decline according to ZuivelNL. ZuivelNL indicates that it is not entirely certain what policy the new Cabinet-Schoof will exactly implement. The new government has a more positive attitude towards the agricultural sector, but according to ZuivelNL, that doesn't say everything.

Therefore, a further reduction of the derogation and a decrease in the livestock herd are expected, resulting in a slightly lower milk supply in 2025 than this year. ZuivelNL estimates a reduction of -2.5%, which would amount to approximately 290 million kilograms. This is seen as very positive in the dairy industry.

A larger decrease in milk supply would also have more significant consequences for the budget of ZuivelNL. With a 2.5% reduction, about €160,000 less in contributions will be received. This has relatively little impact. Larger decreases have a more pronounced effect.
