Milk Price DOC Kaas increases rapidly

July 16, 2024 - Wouter Baan

A promises is a promise. And that's something they understand all too well at DMK in Germany, because the milk price quickly gains ground after promised recovery. In the Netherlands, the members of the subsidiary DOC Kaas also benefit from this rapid rise. Surprisingly, they are the leaders of the Milk Price Comparison in July.

Half a year ago, DOC Kaas was at the bottom of the Milk Price Comparison, but in July they promptly took the lead again. And moreover, with a comfortable margin of €0.25 over second-placed Vreugenhil Dairy Foods. They achieve this position by increasing the base milk price this month by €1.09 to €47.60 per 100 kilograms.

In the ranking of top milk streams, the lead over FrieslandCampina and A-ware is even more substantial, with a difference of over €1. DOC Kaas has recently joined this power play after the launch of the milk stream 'Tuurlijk!', which entitles them to a bonus of €5.

Recovery was promised
The rapid rise in the milk price of DOC Kaas is remarkable, but not entirely unexpected. The German dairy cooperative DMK (the parent organization of which DOC Kaas is a shareholder) was not pleased with the milk money paid out to the members in 2023, as CEO Ingo Müller stated in June during the presentation of the annual figures. He promised the members improvement. Less than a month later, it can be concluded that they are wasting no time, as DOC Kaas now holds the top position in milk prices in the Netherlands. It is likely that DMK has also risen in the rankings in Germany.

The better milk price also serves a noble purpose, which is to satisfy the members, which is not a luxury in the current shrinking market. After the disappointing milk price in 2023, hundreds of member dairy farmers of DMK canceled their membership. However, this exodus did not affect DOC Kaas. They saw their membership numbers increase from about 600 to 653 last year.
