DCA Beursprijs does not anticipate reductions

December 27, 2024 - Wouter Baan

The pig market does not look particularly stable at the end of 2024, but the DCA Beursprijs 2.0 does not anticipate any reductions, although the air is threatening due to the ample supply of pigs.

The signs in the European market are far from favorable due to the ample supply of pigs, resulting from the broken slaughter weeks. There is talk of a 'pig bottleneck' which, due to the logistics of unfavorable falling holidays, was already evident well in advance. In addition, meat sales have dropped significantly now that the Christmas holidays are over. The meat processing industry will only start up again in week 2. Until then, the demand for (half) carcasses and individual parts is very low.

In that week, the next VEZG quotation will only be known again, until then in Germany, €1.92 per kilo is still displayed on the boards, as has been the case for 9 weeks now. As known, Dutch slaughterhouses did lower prices in mid-December, just like the quotations in Belgium and Denmark (Danish Crown and Tican) were also revised downwards. Especially German slaughterhouses have therefore made quite a stir in recent weeks to also (significantly) lower prices in the new year. However, how the soup will be eaten remains to be seen.

Equal DCA Beursprijs 2.0
In 2024 and 2023, pig prices in Europe went down in the new year. In 2022, there was stability, but then the holidays mostly fell on the weekend, making the pig supply relatively less burdensome. Despite the unstable market conditions, pig traders are reluctant to lower the DCA Beursprijs 2.0 for slaughterhouses.

The quotation for slaughtered pigs remains at €1.85 per kilo for week 1. The price of live pigs remains at €1.45 per kilo.
