Pig market not so nervous anymore

July 19, 2024 - By our team of market reporters

The nervous atmosphere in the pig market can quickly diminish, as is evident once again. Just two weeks ago, the reductions were hitting us left and right, and the primary producers feared the worst. Now, the market almost resembles a calm sea.

The Northern part of the Netherlands is currently on holiday, as are many parts of Germany. The pig market is also in holiday mode, with stability prevailing for the time being. A relatively tight supply is met with weak meat demand, resulting in a nice balance. There is no longer any price pressure.

Uncertain outlook
It should be noted that the market horizon is limited. Meat buyers are often short-covered and currently do not feel the need to secure large volumes. This has been the case already, and the unstable market situation of recent weeks has further fueled this mindset. Slaughterhouses are hesitant to have large frozen stocks. This situation leads to a lot of uncertainty for the autumn. However, it is said that the export of by-products outside Europe is picking up a bit.

Higher slaughter numbers to come
With 267,518 slaughters in the Netherlands, it seems that the seasonal low point has been reached. In Germany, the rising trend is at least back on track with 719,622 slaughtered pigs. However, even a few more slaughters should be manageable for the market. As a result, the DCA Market Price remains at €2.06 and the price of live pigs at €1.62 per kilogram.
