Confidence on pig market is increasing again

August 30, 2024 - Wouter Baan

The ground under the recently stabilized pig prices was initially still fragile, but is starting to feel stronger. It is still too early to speak of a recovering market. However, the demand for meat is slowly starting to pick up. Meanwhile, the supply of pigs remains tight.

There is currently not much action on the pig market. The Internet exchange, which remains unchanged round after round, is a silent witness to this. However, the situation is starting to brighten up from the perspective of pig farmers. Almost all traders are happy to deliver and slaughterhouses are starting to request more supply.

Hams in higher demand
There is a reason for this, as the meat processing industry has left the holiday period behind and is in need of more raw materials. However, the demand is not yet booming. It is noticeable that the carcass parts that often perform poorly in the summer period are being taken up more. For example, hams are finding more buyers again, also in the Southern European countries. A sign that autumn is approaching.

We also saw this earlier this week in the meat parts prices of DCA, where hams and shoulders increased in value again. The shoulders, a typical summer product, on the other hand, decreased in price. Overall, the carcass value of the pig increased by 1 cent. This is still not enough to get the pig prices moving.

Low slaughter figures
It is possible that an upward price movement is possible in September. Historically, this month is never boring and increases are sometimes possible, as was the case in 2022, for example. However, pig prices generally do not rise further in the second half of the year, so caution must be exercised with overly high expectations. But perhaps the market can surprise due to the tight supply.

In the past few weeks, there has been the lowest level of slaughtering in the Netherlands in 10 years. This while a few weeks earlier we were at the level of last year. However, a seasonal increase in supply seems to be on the way, although it remains to be seen what the impact of the reportedly many farmers quitting will have on slaughter figures. Something that slaughterhouses are also very curious about.

DCA Beursprijs
For now, the DCA Beursprijs 2.0 remains stable at €1.94 per kilo. The price of live pigs remains at €1.53 per kilo.
