Two countries account for a third of onion exports

November 29, 2024 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

It's been a season of ups and downs for onion exports. This is also the case this week. After a very good week, the export figure takes a step back. The numbers also show the dominant position of Africa.

In week 45, 32,141 tons of onions were exported, according to the figures from KCB/GroentenFruit Huis. This is a slight decrease from the over 39,000 tons in week 44. The average export figure over the last six weeks is 34,000 tons. Perhaps we should conclude that the total sorting capacity has decreased overall, as sorters had no shortage of work at the beginning of November. In total, 498,354 tons of onions have been exported this season up to and including week 45.

This week, Ivory Coast is by far the largest importer with 7,412 tons, not Senegal. Senegal imported 3,654 tons of Dutch onions. These two countries account for about a third of the weekly export. Belgium ranks third this week with an import of 2,640 tons.
