Onion export not disappointing after peak week

December 12, 2024 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

Good weeks alternating with less good weeks, that is the story of the onion export this season. However, the latest export figure is not bad at all. Especially when you consider that a week earlier the 40,000 ton mark was easily surpassed.

In week 47, 36,366 tons of onions were exported, according to the figures from KCB/GroentenFruit Huis. This is indeed below the five-year average of 38,215 tons. But after the 43,641 tons in week 46, the week export in week 47 is nothing to be ashamed of. In total, 578,361 tons of onions have been exported this season. Last year at the same period, the counter stood at 520,313 tons.

Ivory Coast was the largest buyer and imported 5,906 tons in week 47. Senegal follows with 4,762 tons. Together, these countries have imported more than 200,000 tons of onions from the Netherlands this season. That is 20,000 tons more compared to last season. In total, 87 countries were buyers of Dutch onions this week. At the very bottom of the list are the Bahamas where a bag of four kilos of onions has disappeared.
