Ivory Coast and Senegal key in Dutch onion exports

Thursday 4:45 pm - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

The onion exporters were off to a good start in the first full week of December. Two African countries stand out in the latest Dutch export figures. The fact that both countries exported more than 9,000 tons in a week has not occurred earlier this season.

In week 49, 38,665 tons of onions were exported according to the figures from KCB/GroentenFruit Huis. Last year in the same week, 36,336 tons were exported, and the five-year average is 35,753 tons. The total for this season now stands at 657,874 tons. This means that the export is ahead by 73,881 tons compared to last season. However, in the three previous seasons, more onions were exported, with 2020/21 leading with 703,461 tons up to week 49.

Ivory Coast and Senegal were by far the largest buyers of onions. Ivory Coast accounted for 9,371 tons in week 49, closely followed by Senegal with 9,180 tons. This marks the first week this season where two countries have imported more than 9,000 tons. Far behind the major buyers from Africa are Great Britain and the Dominican Republic with 2,400 and 2,260 tons, respectively. In total, 84 countries were in the market for Dutch onions, with Egypt at the bottom of the list importing 5 kilograms of Dutch onions.
