The declining trend in onion exports is slowing down in the latest figures. However, the export in the first six weeks of the calendar year is not disappointing at all. In the last twenty years, there have only been two occasions when more onions were exported during this period.
In week 6, the Netherlands exported 17,469 tons of onions, according to the figures from KCB/GroentenFruit Huis. This is slightly less than the 18,402 tons that crossed the border this week a year earlier, but slightly better than the five-year average of 17,395 tons. The season total is 901,573 tons, putting the current season in third place as the best export season.
United Kingdom in the lead
In the first six weeks of 2025, 136,962 tons were exported. Only in 2022 and 2016 did more Dutch onions cross the border during this period. It is worth noting that the peak in week 2 with 36,226 tons is boosting the export total nicely this season.
In week 6, the United Kingdom was the largest buyer of Dutch onions with 1,898 tons. This was followed by Mauritania and Israel with 1,699 and 1,203 tons respectively. Guinea was the last destination to take more than 1,000 tons, namely 1,174 tons. In total, 82 countries bought Dutch onions. On average, they purchased 213 tons.
