The onion export is progressing in fits and starts. After a somewhat disappointing week where the export just dropped below 30,000, the most recent export figures give the farmer hope again.
In week 39, 37,005 tons of onions were exported according to the figures from KCB/GroentenFruit Huis. Last year in the same week, 28,786 tons were exported. The five-year average is 37,225 tons. This season, the export remains just below that.
There have been some shifts in the list of largest buyers this week. Senegal and Ivory Coast are by far the most important buyers, accounting for 6,120 and 5,415 tons respectively in week 39. Guinea follows in third place with 3,287 tons. Great Britain is not in the top three for the first time in a long time, but is in fourth place with 2,271 tons. In total, Dutch onions were sent to 81 different countries.
