Belgian dairy coops in tight price competition

July 17, 2024 - By our team of market reporters

The Belgian dairy cooperatives Laiterie des Ardennes (LDA) and Milcobel have increased their milk prices for June and July by 75 cents each. However, the increase at LDA is slightly more favorable when converted to real milkprice levels. LDA ups 82 cents, Milcobel 80.

With the latest increase in June, LDA also pays the second highest milk price in Belgium, after FrieslandCampina. This is based on an annual supply of 1.3 million liters and real levels, as assumed in the Belgian milk price comparison tool from Boerenbusiness.

In June, LDA also pays a slightly higher price per kilo of fat and protein than Milcobel does in July, but the milk price structure differs between the two cooperatives.  LDA currently sees itself operating relatively strongly in the market, clearly better than last year when there were still teething problems with mozzarella production.

Milcobel also indicates benefiting well from the demand for mozzarella, although according to the company, the expected summer peak is slow to start due to the disappointing weather. In general, Milcobel says it is doing well in the current somewhat 'calm market' with its product portfolio. Particularly the relatively high fat prices help, while powder prices are slightly decreasing.

All in all, this means that Milcobel can pay a maximum of €47.15 per 100 liters, as reported by the company. This price is exclusively for dairy farmers with an annual supply of 2.7 million liters or more and milk with 43 grams of fat and 35 grams of protein per liter.
