The German meat production increased by 1.3% in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period last year, according to Destatis from Germany. A striking fact is that pork production rose for the first time since 2016.
Preliminary data indicates a total of 3.4 million tons of meat produced in the first half of this year. Approximately 24 million pigs, cattle, sheep, goats, and horses were slaughtered in abattoirs. Additionally, 344.3 million chickens, turkeys, and ducks were slaughtered.
The majority of German meat production is pork. This is evident in the first half of 2024 with pork accounting for 62% of the total meat production. It is noteworthy that pork production increased in the first half of the year for the first time since 2016. A total of 2.1 million tons of pork were produced in the first half of the year, representing a 1.1% increase compared to the same period last year.
In the first half of the year, 21.9 million pigs were slaughtered, marking a 0.4% increase from the same period last year. Nearly all slaughtered pigs (96.6%) were of domestic origin, with a slightly higher proportion this year compared to last year. Conversely, the proportion of pigs of foreign origin decreased compared to the previous year.
Beef production increased by 2.5% compared to the same period last year, reaching 496.6 thousand tons. A total of 1.5 million cows were slaughtered, reflecting a 1.3% increase. Poultry meat production increased by 1.3% in the first half of the year compared to the previous year, totaling 780.7 thousand tons of poultry meat. A total of 344.3 million animals of various poultry species were slaughtered, showing minimal change compared to the same period last year.
