Brazil suddenly exports much more poultry meat

October 8, 2024 - Matthijs Bremer

The Brazilian export of poultry meat has increased significantly. Not only have the export volumes risen sharply, the value of the export has also increased substantially. Earlier this year, the export was lower than in 2023. The turnaround is largely due to a successful diversification of the Brazilian poultry meat market.

The Brazilian export of poultry meat increased by 22.1% in September compared to September 2023. The country exported a total of 485,000 tons of poultry meat. In September 2023, the export was 397,100 tons. The poultry meat export that month marked the second strongest export performance in the country's history. Only in March 2023 was the export larger, with the country exporting 514,600 tons of poultry meat.

Not only does the export rise significantly, but the Brazilian poultry meat sector also performs significantly better than the rest of 2024. In the first nine months of this year, the export increased by 0.6% to 3.92 million tons of poultry meat. In the same period in 2023, the South American country exported 3.89 million tons.

The value of the export also increased, by 32.6% from $719.3 million in September 2023 to $980.5 million a year later. This means that the value of the export is rising much more strongly than the volumes. This indicates a remarkable increase in export prices, as the value of the export was lower throughout the year than in 2023. The value of the export was 4% lower. In the first nine months of 2024, Brazil exported $7.27 billion.

Diversification
The better result in September is the result of a successful diversification of the export. A major cause of the weak export in 2023 was a significantly lower sales volume in China. That was not the case this year. In total, the export to the Asian country decreased by 3.4% to 55,100 tons. However, the export to almost all markets has increased significantly. The export to the United Arab Emirates increased by 17.6% to 41,400 tons. Meanwhile, the export to Saudi Arabia increased by 48.6% to 29,900 tons. Meanwhile, the export to Japan increased by a whopping 48.6%.

Almost all major poultry meat-producing regions benefit from the stronger export. The largest export region, Parana, saw the export increase by 20% in September to 195,600 tons. The export from Santa Catarina increased by 23.1% to 105,600 tons. The export from Rio Grande do Sul increased by 12.4%, slightly less, to 63,200 tons. The strongest growth was in Sao Paulo. The export from that region increased by 30.5% to 28,100 tons. The export from Goias increased the least. In total, the export increased by 3.4% to 19,500 tons.
