Revival in onion export only short-lived

April 25, 2024 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

Two weeks of exporting more than 20,000 tons would have been great for the onion market. The revival in week 13, however, did not continue in week 14. Almost a quarter fewer onions were exported.

In week 14, 15,118 tons of onions were exported according to the figures from KCB/GroentenFruit Huis. That is more than 5,000 tons less than in week 13. The five-year average for this week is 165,616 tons. In total, 886,913 tons of onions have been exported up to week 14. The export is 12% behind last season.

The largest buyer of onions from the Netherlands was the United Kingdom with 2,089 tons. Spain follows with 1,838 tons, and in third place is Israel, which imported 1,792 tons of onions. Five destinations took more than 1,000 tons. Except for Brazil and Israel, the top 10 destinations consist entirely of European countries.
