Brits have less appetite for a Dutch onion

September 6, 2024 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

African countries also feature prominently in the latest Dutch onion export figures. The export in the most recent figure exceeds 20,000 tons. Nothing wrong with that, but compared to the five-year average, the export was disappointing.

In week 33, 21,292 tons of onions were exported, according to the figures from KCB/GroentenFruit Huis. It is not surprising that the export took a step back compared to the 24,770 tons in week 32, as a boat was bound for Senegal then. The five-year average stands at 26,813 tons. A total of 111,895 tons have been exported this season compared to 118,345 last season. The lag remains within limits.

Ivory Coast, Great Britain, and Senegal are the main destinations this week with 4,304, 2,305, and 1,959 tons, respectively. Ivory Coast has already taken 25,598 tons this season compared to 10,782 tons last season. For Senegal, the situation is exactly the opposite with an import of 11,758 tons this season and 25,481 tons last season. It more or less balances out. Among the major importers, it is mainly Great Britain that is falling behind with 14,699 tons this season compared to 21,327 tons a year ago.
