Irish milk production remains below last year's level

Monday 8:00 am - Alex Jurvillier

The Irish milk supply remains below last year's level in August. We have been seeing this throughout the year as well. The wet weather, which prevented the cows from going out early, affected production earlier this year. Since then, Irish production has shown little recovery.

However, we see that milk production follows the annual production pattern. Milk supply usually peaks in May and then decreases again.

In August, the milk supply was 915,260 tons. This is the lowest since 2020, when milk production was 893,370 tons. Last August, the milk supply was 936,140 tons. The five-year average is 927,140 tons.

The total milk supply up to August 2024 was 6,396,640 tons. Compared to the 6,712,630 tons from last year in the same period, this is significantly lower. In 2022, milk production up to August was 6,774,690 tons, more than in 2023, making the decline more evident. In 2021, production in the same period was 6,803,910 tons.

Usually, Ireland's milk production peaks in the months of April, May, June, and July. Those months have passed now. Ireland produces approximately 8.5 billion liters of milk per year. 95% of that milk is exported. Therefore, Ireland has relatively little influence on world prices.
