Nearly 200 jobs to disappear at Vion in the Netherlands

August 23, 2024 - Wouter Baan

At meat processor Vion, 190 jobs will disappear in the Netherlands, of which 45 are forced redundancies. Not only at the main locations in Boxtel but according to trade union CNV also at the other locations. Meanwhile, CNV and FNV have withdrawn from the discussions because Vion is not willing to cooperate on a social plan.

The announced redundancies are remarkable. Vion stated in May that it did not recognize the rumors of a reorganization in the Netherlands. Now it turns out that 190 jobs will indeed disappear, of which 45 are forced redundancies. This was communicated by a CNV spokesperson. Vion itself was not available for comment on Friday morning. Vion has a total of about 12,000 full-time employees.

The employees in question were reportedly informed this week that their employment will end. It mainly concerns supporting roles, spread across all Vion locations, including the head office in Boxtel. The trade unions have halted discussions with Vion as the meat processor is not willing to cooperate on a social plan.

The redundancies are not unexpected. Vion is facing financial difficulties and had to incur a loss of over €100 million last year. The publication of the 2023 annual figures has been postponed until September. Vion will also provide an update on the announced departure from Germany at that time. Earlier this week, it was announced that Vion has found a buyer for two of its total of eleven German locations.
